A Brief History of Gower Chorale

Who would have thought that a conversation on a coach coming home from a BBC Welsh Chorus rehearsal would have resulted in The Gower Chorale as it is today? What a long way we've come in 30 years.

At the time, All Saints were seeking a grant to renovate the organ, and the chance of achieving an award would be much enhanced by demonstrating the organ's relevance to the wider public. Christopher Waring Davies' dream to start a choir in Swansea West capable of performing large choral works neatly fitted into this scenario, and the ambition was born and, I am sure you will agree, realised.

After much fundraising and several meetings The Gower Chorale was ready to perform its first concert. This took place on 29th November 1995 .The main work was Mozart's Solemn Vespers and the newly formed choir, All Saints Church choir, together with a small group of the BBC Chorus and several other choristers, started the journey of The Gower Chorale.

After five years as MD Christopher decided to retire and so began a series of very accomplished conductors, each with their own style and personality beginning with the late John Jenkins, Richard Whitehead, Carole Morgans,Luke Spencer, James Davies and Dr William Reynolds, ably supported by very talented accompanists.

Our present MD is taking the choir on different journeys, some more challenging than others, but all worthwhile. His musicality and constant striving for perfection and style is gradually becoming more evident in each performance. Again, we are so fortunate to work with William and look forward to a great partnership between him, our new accompanist Chris Samuel and the Choir.
